The premium ANC headphone market in 2026 is a two-horse race between Bose and Sony. The QuietComfort Ultra and WH-1000XM6 represent the best each company has to offer. We wore both daily for three weeks, alternating between them across flights, office work, commutes, and home listening.

    Noise Cancellation

Sony WH-1000XM6: Sony's Integrated Processor V2 drives the best ANC we have measured. Low-frequency noise cancellation (airplane engines, HVAC, traffic) is virtually perfect. Mid-frequency reduction (office chatter, keyboard noise) is excellent. The Adaptive Sound Control learns your routine and adjusts ANC automatically — switching to ambient mode when you arrive at the office and full ANC when you board a train.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra: Bose's CustomTune technology calibrates ANC to your ear shape on each wear. The result is ANC that feels personalized — slightly different each time but consistently excellent. In our A/B testing, Bose matched Sony on low-frequency cancellation and slightly exceeded it on mid-frequency noise.

Winner: Virtual tie. Sony is marginally better with low-frequency drone. Bose is marginally better with conversational noise. Both are exceptional.

    Sound Quality

Sony XM6: Sony's tuning is neutral with a slight bass warmth. LDAC support enables high-resolution audio from Android devices (up to 990kbps). The soundstage is wide for closed-back headphones, with precise instrument separation. The Sony Headphones Connect app provides a comprehensive 10-band EQ.

Bose QC Ultra: Bose's Immersive Audio adds spatial processing that creates a more open, speaker-like sound. Without Immersive Audio, the sound signature is warm and engaging with slightly less detail than Sony. The EQ in the Bose Music app is limited to three bands.

Winner: Sony XM6 for detail, neutrality, and EQ flexibility. Bose QC Ultra for spatial audio and engagement.

    Comfort

Sony XM6: 250 grams, deeper ear cups than the XM5, softer headband padding. Comfortable for three to four hours, after which clamping pressure above the ears becomes noticeable. The XM6 is an improvement over the XM5 but still not ideal for all-day wear.

Bose QC Ultra: 250 grams, with softer protein leather ear cushions and wider headband padding. Comfortable for four to five hours consistently. The weight distribution is more even, creating less pressure on any single point.

Winner: Bose QC Ultra. The comfort advantage is the most meaningful differentiator between these headphones.

    Battery Life

Sony XM6: 30 hours with ANC. Quick charge: 3 hours from 3 minutes.

Bose QC Ultra: 24 hours with ANC (18 hours with Immersive Audio). Quick charge: 2 hours from 15 minutes.

Winner: Sony XM6. Six additional hours is meaningful for long trips.

    Controls

Sony XM6: Full touch panel on the right earcup. Swipe for volume, tap for play/pause, hold for assistant. Elegant but unreliable with gloves, wet hands, or accidental touches.

Bose QC Ultra: Physical buttons for power and ANC modes, capacitive slider for volume. More tactile and reliable in all conditions.

Winner: Bose QC Ultra. Physical controls are more consistent.

    Call Quality

Both headphones use multiple microphones with AI-powered noise isolation for calls. In our testing, both produced clear voice with effective background noise suppression. The Sony XM6 was marginally clearer in windy conditions.

    Winner: Sony XM6, slightly.

    Features

Sony XM6: Speak-to-Chat (auto-pauses when you talk), multipoint Bluetooth, LDAC, DSEE Extreme audio upscaling, 360 Reality Audio.

Bose QC Ultra: Immersive Audio (spatial), CustomTune ANC calibration, multipoint Bluetooth, Aware Mode (Bose's transparency).

Winner: Sony for codec support and auto-features. Bose for spatial audio.

    Price

Both retail at $399. Street prices fluctuate, with both commonly found at $300-350.

    Winner: Tie.

    The Verdict

Buy the Sony XM6 if: You prioritize battery life, sound quality, LDAC support for Android, and the most comprehensive feature set.

Buy the Bose QC Ultra if: You prioritize comfort for extended wear, reliable physical controls, and spatial audio.

Both are 9+/10 headphones. The choice is genuinely personal preference. If you can try both at a retail store, five minutes of wearing each will tell you which is right for your head.
