Mesh routers have transformed home WiFi from a frustrating dead-zone lottery to reliable whole-home coverage. The Amazon eero Pro 6E and Google Nest WiFi Pro are the two most popular premium mesh systems. We deployed both in a 2,400 square foot two-story home and measured coverage, speed, and reliability over three weeks.
Coverage
eero Pro 6E (3-Pack): Three units covered our entire 2,400 sq ft home with strong signal throughout. The farthest point from any node (the upstairs guest bedroom) showed signal strength of -62 dBm — well within the usable range. No dead zones.
Google Nest WiFi Pro (3-Pack): Three units provided comparable coverage. The farthest point measured -65 dBm — slightly weaker than eero but still fully usable. No dead zones.
Winner: eero Pro 6E by a small margin.
Speed
We tested with a 500 Mbps internet connection using Speedtest.net across multiple locations.
eero Pro 6E (5GHz, 5 feet from node): 490 Mbps average eero Pro 6E (5GHz, 30 feet, one wall): 380 Mbps average eero Pro 6E (6GHz backhaul): Consistent speeds throughout, as the dedicated 6GHz band handles inter-node communication.
Nest WiFi Pro (5GHz, 5 feet from node): 475 Mbps average Nest WiFi Pro (5GHz, 30 feet, one wall): 350 Mbps average Nest WiFi Pro (6GHz backhaul): Consistent speeds with similar inter-node performance to eero.
Both systems support WiFi 6E with a dedicated 6GHz band for backhaul, keeping the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands free for client devices. Speed differences are marginal and within testing variance.
Winner: eero Pro 6E by a slight margin.
Setup
eero Pro 6E: The eero app walks through setup in about 10 minutes. Plug in the first unit, connect to your modem, follow the app prompts, then plug in and register additional nodes. The app detected our ISP settings automatically.
Nest WiFi Pro: The Google Home app handles setup similarly. The process took about 12 minutes. Google's app required more permissions and account integration than eero's.
Winner: Tie. Both are simple and well-guided.
Smart Home Integration
eero Pro 6E: Built-in Zigbee hub (on some models), works as a Thread border router, and integrates with Amazon Alexa for voice control. The Zigbee hub eliminates the need for a separate smart home bridge for compatible devices.
Nest WiFi Pro: Built-in Thread border router, integrates with Google Home. Matter support means compatibility with most modern smart home devices. No built-in Zigbee hub.
Winner: eero Pro 6E for Zigbee support. Nest WiFi Pro for Google Home integration.
Parental Controls and Security
eero Pro 6E: eero Secure ($10/month) adds ad blocking, content filtering, threat protection, and activity insights. Without the subscription, parental controls are limited to basic device pausing and profile grouping.
Nest WiFi Pro: Google Home app provides free device prioritization, scheduled pausing, and SafeSearch enforcement for children's profiles. No subscription required for basic controls.
Winner: Nest WiFi Pro for free parental controls. eero for more comprehensive (paid) security features.
Hardware Design
eero Pro 6E: Compact white cylinders that blend into most home decor. Minimal footprint.
Nest WiFi Pro: Slightly larger pill-shaped units available in multiple colors. More visible but aesthetically pleasing.
Winner: Tie. Both are designed to be visible without being intrusive.
Price
eero Pro 6E (3-Pack): $400-450 Nest WiFi Pro (3-Pack): $350-400
Winner: Nest WiFi Pro for price.
For a budget alternative, the TP-Link Deco X55 (3-Pack) at $180 provides WiFi 6 mesh coverage without WiFi 6E but at a dramatically lower price.
The Verdict
Buy eero Pro 6E if: You use Amazon Alexa, want the built-in Zigbee hub, and prioritize maximum coverage and speed.
Buy Nest WiFi Pro if: You use Google Home, want free parental controls, and prefer the lower price.
Both systems deliver excellent whole-home WiFi. The eero is marginally faster. The Nest is more affordable with better free features. Your smart home ecosystem determines the right choice.
