The Sonos Era 300 and Apple HomePod 2 represent two different philosophies in premium smart speakers. Sonos prioritizes audio quality and platform-agnostic compatibility. Apple prioritizes ecosystem integration and Siri intelligence. We placed both in the same living room and lived with them for a month.
Sound Quality
Sonos Era 300: Six drivers arranged for spatial audio output, including upward-firing speakers for height channels. The sound is spacious, detailed, and room-filling. Dolby Atmos Music tracks on Apple Music and Amazon Music HD sound genuinely immersive — instruments and vocals appear to come from specific positions in the room rather than from a single box.
The bass is deep and controlled without overwhelming the midrange. At high volumes, the Era 300 maintains clarity and composure. In our testing, it is the best-sounding single smart speaker available at any price.
Apple HomePod 2: A single full-range woofer and five tweeters arranged in a beam-forming array. The HomePod 2 uses computational audio to analyze the room's acoustics and adapt its sound output. The result is impressive for a speaker with fewer drivers — rich bass, clear vocals, and a soundstage that expands beyond the speaker's physical boundaries.
However, the HomePod 2 sounds notably smaller than the Era 300. The spatial audio effect is less convincing, and the dynamic range is narrower. At moderate volumes, the difference is subtle. At higher volumes, the Era 300 pulls ahead decisively.
Winner: Sonos Era 300, by a meaningful margin.
Smart Assistant
Sonos Era 300: Supports both Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control. Alexa provides comprehensive smart home control, music playback, and general knowledge queries. Sonos Voice Control handles music requests with a focus on privacy (processed on-device).
Apple HomePod 2: Siri provides Apple ecosystem control — HomePod, Apple TV, HomeKit devices, Find My, messages, and reminders. For Apple households, Siri on HomePod feels natural and integrated. For non-Apple tasks and general knowledge, Siri remains behind Alexa.
Winner: Apple HomePod 2 for Apple homes. Sonos Era 300 for everything else.
Smart Home Control
Sonos Era 300: Controls Alexa-compatible devices. Not a smart home hub. Relies on external hubs for Zigbee and Thread devices.
Apple HomePod 2: Functions as a Thread border router and HomeKit hub. Controls HomeKit and Matter devices natively. The Thread radio enables direct communication with compatible sensors and devices without WiFi.
Winner: Apple HomePod 2 as a smart home hub.
Music Service Compatibility
Sonos Era 300: Supports Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, Pandora, Deezer, and dozens more. The broadest streaming compatibility of any smart speaker.
Apple HomePod 2: Native support for Apple Music with full Lossless and Dolby Atmos. AirPlay support for any app that can cast audio. Spotify does not have native integration — you must AirPlay from your phone.
Winner: Sonos Era 300 for direct streaming flexibility.
Multi-Room Audio
Both support multi-room configurations. Sonos offers stereo pairing with two Era 300 speakers and multi-room grouping with any Sonos speakers. Apple offers stereo pairing with two HomePods and multi-room via AirPlay 2.
The Sonos ecosystem is more mature for multi-room audio, with easier grouping, ungrouping, and room-specific volume control.
Winner: Sonos Era 300.
Price
Sonos Era 300: $449 Apple HomePod 2: $299
The HomePod 2 is $150 less — a significant difference for a single speaker.
Winner: Apple HomePod 2 for value.
