Smart Doorbells Compared: Ring vs Nest vs Arlo vs Eufy

We installed four smart doorbells on the same house to compare video quality, motion detection, latency, and smart home integration head to head.

We installed the Ring Video Doorbell 4, Google Nest Doorbell (wired), Arlo Video Doorbell, and Eufy Video Doorbell Dual on the same front porch to compare them under identical conditions. After 60 days of side-by-side testing, here is how they stack up on the metrics that actually matter.

    Video Quality

All four doorbells produce 1080p or higher video. The differences are in dynamic range, color accuracy, and night vision.

Best daytime video: The Google Nest Doorbell produces the most natural colors and handles high-contrast scenes (bright sky, shaded porch) best thanks to Google's HDR processing.

Best night vision: The Ring Video Doorbell 4 with Color Night Vision produces the clearest, most usable nighttime footage. You can identify faces, clothing colors, and vehicle details in near-complete darkness.

Best field of view: The Arlo Video Doorbell offers a 180-degree diagonal field of view — the widest of the four — capturing visitors, packages, and the entire porch in a single frame.

Best resolution: The Eufy Video Doorbell Dual records in 2K (2560x1920), providing noticeably sharper detail than the 1080p competitors. It also includes a second camera angle aimed downward at packages.

    Motion Detection and Alerts

This is where the doorbells differ most. Motion detection quality determines whether you get timely alerts for real events or constant false alarms from passing cars and blowing leaves.

Most accurate: The Nest Doorbell uses Google's AI to distinguish between people, packages, animals, and vehicles. Notifications tell you what triggered the alert ("Person detected" or "Package detected"). False alarm rate was the lowest of the four.

Most customizable: Ring offers customizable motion zones and sensitivity settings. You can draw specific zones on the camera view and adjust sensitivity per zone. This manual control is powerful but requires more initial setup than Google's automatic AI.

Most aggressive: Arlo detects everything and sends frequent alerts. Good for maximum security coverage but can be overwhelming without tuning.

    Latency (Ring-to-Answer Time)

When someone presses the doorbell, how quickly does the live view appear on your phone?

Ring: 3-5 seconds. Nest: 2-4 seconds. Arlo: 4-7 seconds. Eufy: 2-3 seconds (local processing advantage).

The Eufy Video Doorbell Dual wins on latency because it processes locally rather than routing through cloud servers. The difference is noticeable — you answer the door before the visitor gives up and leaves.

    Cloud Storage and Subscriptions

Ring requires a Ring Protect subscription ($4/month or $100/year) for video recording. Without it, you only get live view. Nest requires Nest Aware ($8/month) for video history, though it offers 3 hours of free event recording. Arlo requires Arlo Secure ($8/month) for cloud recording and AI features.

Eufy stores video locally on its HomeBase, with no subscription required for basic recording and playback. This makes it the cheapest to operate long-term but means recorded footage is stored on a device in your home that could be stolen.

    Our Picks

Best overall: Google Nest Doorbell (wired) for its AI detection accuracy, natural video quality, and Google Home integration.

Best value: Eufy Video Doorbell Dual for local storage (no subscription), 2K resolution, and the lowest latency.

Best for Ring ecosystem: Ring Video Doorbell 4 if you already use Ring cameras and alarm.

Best for security: Arlo Video Doorbell for the widest field of view and aggressive motion detection.
