Smart Thermostats Compared: Nest vs Ecobee vs Honeywell in 2026

We installed all three smart thermostats in the same house and tracked comfort, energy savings, and app experience over 90 days. Here are the results.

Smart thermostats promise to save energy and improve comfort, but the three major brands take noticeably different approaches. We installed the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, and the Honeywell Home T9 in the same 2,400 sq ft home and compared them over three months.

    Setup and Installation

All three thermostats install in roughly the same way — remove the old thermostat, label the wires, attach the new base plate, connect the wires, and snap on the display. Each takes 20-30 minutes if your existing wiring is compatible.

The Nest requires a C-wire or its included power connector for systems without one. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium includes a Power Extender Kit that solves the C-wire problem elegantly. The Honeywell T9 requires a C-wire with no included adapter.

Ecobee wins the setup experience with the clearest wiring instructions and a step-by-step app walkthrough that photographs your existing wiring before you disconnect anything.

    Learning and Scheduling

The Nest lives up to its name — it learns your schedule over the first two weeks by tracking when you adjust the temperature and when you are home. After the learning period, it creates an automatic schedule that requires minimal manual adjustment. For people who have consistent routines, this works remarkably well.

Ecobee takes a different approach with room sensors. Instead of just reading the temperature at the thermostat, it uses wireless sensors placed in frequently used rooms to measure occupancy and temperature. The thermostat adjusts based on which rooms are occupied. This is a significant advantage in multi-story homes or homes with uneven heating.

The Honeywell T9 also supports room sensors and offers geofencing, but its learning capabilities are less sophisticated than the Nest. It relies more on manual scheduling with smart adjustments based on occupancy.

    Energy Savings

Over our 90-day test, all three thermostats reduced HVAC runtime compared to our baseline manual thermostat operation. The Nest saved approximately 12% on heating costs, the Ecobee saved 15%, and the Honeywell saved 10%. The Ecobee's advantage came primarily from its sensor-based approach — heating only the rooms that were occupied rather than targeting the thermostat's hallway location.

    Smart Home Integration

All three work with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit (Ecobee and Honeywell; Nest works with Google Home and Alexa). Ecobee has the best cross-platform support and includes a built-in Alexa speaker in the thermostat itself.

The Nest integrates most deeply with the Google ecosystem. If you have Nest cameras, a Google Home speaker, and a Nest Doorbell, the Nest thermostat fits seamlessly into that world.

    The Verdict

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is our top pick for most homes. The room sensor system provides genuinely better comfort in multi-room and multi-story homes, and the energy savings reflect that advantage. The Nest is the best choice for Google ecosystem users who want a set-it-and-forget-it experience. The Honeywell T9 is a solid option for those who prefer traditional scheduling with smart features.
