Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE Review: Best Budget Tablet

Samsung's Fan Edition tablet offers S Pen included, a gorgeous display, and DeX desktop mode — all for under $500. We tested it as an iPad alternative.

The tablet market is dominated by iPads. Samsung's Galaxy Tab S-series has been the most credible Android alternative, but the flagship Tab S10 Ultra costs more than most laptops. The Tab S10 FE is Samsung's answer to the question: what if the Tab S-series were affordable?

At $449 with the S Pen included, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE undercuts the iPad Air while offering features Apple charges hundreds more to match.

    Display: The AMOLED Advantage

The 10.9-inch AMOLED display is the Tab S10 FE's strongest selling point. Colors are vibrant, blacks are perfect (it is AMOLED), and the 90Hz refresh rate makes scrolling buttery smooth. Watching movies and TV shows on this display is a premium experience that LCD-based iPads cannot match at any price.

Peak brightness of 600 nits handles outdoor use adequately, though direct sunlight remains challenging. For indoor use — the vast majority of tablet use — the display is outstanding.

    S Pen: Included, Not Extra

Samsung includes the S Pen in the box. Apple charges $129 for an Apple Pencil and $79 for the cheaper version. Samsung's S Pen feels natural for note-taking, sketching, and document annotation. The latency is low enough that handwritten notes feel responsive and accurate.

For students, the combination of a capable S Pen and Samsung Notes (with handwriting-to-text conversion and PDF annotation) creates a compelling note-taking system. We used it for two weeks as a meeting notes device and found it more than capable.

    Performance

The Exynos 1580 processor handles everyday tasks — web browsing, streaming, social media, light photo editing, and productivity apps — without issue. Samsung DeX mode transforms the tablet into a desktop-like experience with resizable windows and a taskbar, making it genuinely useful for light productivity when connected to a Bluetooth keyboard.

Gaming performance is adequate for casual titles but falls short of the iPad Air's M2 chip for demanding games. If gaming is a priority, the iPad Air is the better choice.

    Battery Life

Samsung rates the Tab S10 FE at up to 13 hours of video playback. Our mixed-use testing (streaming, browsing, note-taking, some gaming) yielded consistent 9-10 hour days before needing a charge. The 45W fast charging takes the battery from zero to full in approximately 80 minutes.

    Android Tablet Ecosystem

The Android tablet app ecosystem has improved but still trails iPadOS. Most major apps have tablet-optimized layouts (Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Microsoft Office). Some apps (particularly specialized creative tools) remain phone-scaled or absent. Samsung's partnership with Google has narrowed the gap, but it has not closed it.

For media consumption, web browsing, note-taking, and productivity, the Android tablet experience in 2026 is excellent. For creative workflows that depend on specific apps (Procreate, LumaFusion, GoodNotes), the iPad remains essential.

    Versus the iPad

The Tab S10 FE's advantages over the base iPad: AMOLED display, included S Pen, expandable storage via microSD, and Samsung DeX. The iPad's advantages: superior app ecosystem, better performance for gaming, and seamless integration with iPhone and Mac.

For Android phone users, the Tab S10 FE is the obvious tablet choice. For iPhone users, the iPad makes more sense for ecosystem coherence.

    Build Quality

The aluminum frame feels solid and premium. At 523 grams, it is comfortable for extended handheld use. The quad speaker system by AKG produces clear, room-filling sound that is surprisingly good for a tablet.

    The Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE is the best Android tablet for the money. The AMOLED display and included S Pen at $449 represent genuine value that no other tablet matches. If you are invested in the Android ecosystem or want a premium display without a premium price, this is your tablet.

Rating: 8.6/10 — The Android tablet that finally makes the case.
