iRobot's Roomba invented the robot vacuum category. Roborock has emerged as its most formidable challenger. We ran the Roomba j9+ and Roborock S9 MaxV in the same 2,400 square foot home for one month, cleaning the same rooms, tackling the same messes, and evaluating the same criteria.

    Cleaning Performance

iRobot Roomba Combo j9+: The j9+ uses rubber dual-roller extractors that handle pet hair well and avoid tangles. Suction power is rated at 7,000Pa — strong for the category but below the S9 MaxV. In our testing, the j9+ cleaned hardwood floors effectively on a single pass and required two passes on medium-pile carpet to match the Roborock's single-pass results.

Roborock S9 MaxV: With 10,000Pa of suction, the S9 MaxV extracted visibly more debris from carpet in a single pass. The dual rubber brush design prevents hair wrapping. On hardwood, both perform equally well. On carpet, the Roborock's superior suction makes a measurable difference.

Winner: Roborock S9 MaxV for cleaning thoroughness.

    Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance

Roomba j9+: Uses a front-facing camera with PrecisionVision Navigation. It identifies and avoids objects like shoes, socks, and pet waste. The avoidance is reliable — we left various objects on the floor and the j9+ navigated around them consistently. However, it occasionally bumps into furniture before redirecting.

Roborock S9 MaxV: Uses LiDAR mapping combined with a camera and Reactive AI 2.0. Navigation is more precise and efficient. The S9 MaxV plans straighter paths, spends less time bumping into obstacles, and covers the same floor area in roughly 20% less time. The obstacle avoidance is faster and more proactive — it adjusts course before contact.

Winner: Roborock S9 MaxV for navigation efficiency.

    Mopping

Roomba j9+: The Combo version includes a top-mounted mop pad that deploys automatically on hard floors and retracts on carpet. The mopping pressure is light — adequate for maintenance cleaning but insufficient for dried spills.

Roborock S9 MaxV: The VibraRise 3.0 sonic mop vibrates at 4,000 RPM with consistent downward pressure. It handled dried coffee, juice spills, and tracked-in dirt that the Roomba's mop left behind. The mop automatically lifts when transitioning to carpet.

    Winner: Roborock S9 MaxV, significantly.

    Self-Emptying Dock

Roomba j9+: The Clean Base dock empties the dustbin automatically. It is loud during emptying (comparable to a handheld vacuum) but effective. The bags last approximately 60 days.

Roborock S9 MaxV: The dock empties the dustbin, washes the mop pads with hot water, and dries them with heated air. It is a complete maintenance solution. The mop washing eliminates the mildew smell that plagues robot mops without auto-wash docks.

Winner: Roborock S9 MaxV for comprehensive dock functionality.

    App Experience

Roomba j9+: The iRobot app is clean and simple. Room mapping, scheduling, and cleaning history are straightforward. The "Clean While I'm Away" feature uses your phone's location to start cleaning when you leave home.

Roborock S9 MaxV: The Roborock app offers deeper customization — room-specific suction levels, custom no-go zones, furniture-specific settings, and detailed cleaning analytics. More powerful but more complex.

Winner: Tie. iRobot for simplicity, Roborock for power users.

    Price

Roomba j9+: $799-999 (configuration dependent) Roborock S9 MaxV: $1,200-1,400 (configuration dependent)

The Roborock commands a $300-400 premium.

    Winner: Roomba j9+ for value.

    The Verdict

Buy the Roomba j9+ if: You want a reliable, proven robot vacuum with simple setup and effective cleaning at a lower price point.

Buy the Roborock S9 MaxV if: You want the best possible cleaning performance, superior mopping, and a fully automated maintenance dock, and you are willing to pay the premium.

The Roborock S9 MaxV is the better robot vacuum. The Roomba j9+ is the better value. For most households, the Roomba is sufficient. For pet owners and allergy sufferers who need maximum cleaning performance, the Roborock justifies its premium.
