Everyone knows Amazon makes Echo speakers and Kindle e-readers. But Amazon's hardware portfolio extends far beyond the obvious. Some of these products are genuinely excellent; others are cautionary tales. Here are 10 Amazon products that fly under the radar.
1. Amazon eero Mesh WiFi
Amazon acquired eero in 2019, and the eero Pro 6E ($180 per unit) is one of the best mesh WiFi systems available. It supports WiFi 6E, has a clean app interface, and integrates with Alexa for voice-controlled network management. The setup is absurdly simple — often under 10 minutes for a three-node system.
Verdict: Excellent. One of the best consumer mesh systems.
2. Ring (Doorbells, Cameras, Alarm)
Ring is an Amazon company, and their ecosystem has grown enormous. The Ring Video Doorbell 4 ($180) and Ring Alarm Pro ($250) form a comprehensive home security system. The integration with Alexa and Echo devices is seamless.
Verdict: Good ecosystem, but requires a subscription for full functionality.
3. Amazon Halo Rise (Bedside Sleep Tracker)
The Amazon Halo Rise is a no-contact sleep tracker that sits on your nightstand and monitors sleep stages using radar — no wearable needed. It also functions as a sunrise alarm clock with gradually brightening light.
Verdict: Innovative concept, execution is mixed. Sleep tracking accuracy varies.
4. Amazon Fire TV Soundbar
The Amazon Fire TV Soundbar ($120) combines a soundbar with Fire TV built in — one device replaces both your streaming stick and speaker. Alexa is integrated, and it supports DTS Virtual:X for spatial audio.
Verdict: Smart concept at a great price. Audio quality is good for the money but won't replace a premium soundbar.
5. Blink Security Cameras
Blink is another Amazon acquisition. The Blink Outdoor 4 ($80) is a wire-free, weather-resistant camera that runs for up to 2 years on AA batteries. Local storage via the Blink Sync Module 2 avoids monthly cloud fees.
Verdict: Best battery-powered camera for the price. The battery life claim holds up.
6. Amazon Kids Tablet
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids ($140) includes a thick protective case, 2-year worry-free guarantee (Amazon replaces it if your kid breaks it, no questions asked), and a year of Amazon Kids+ content. As a kids-specific tablet, it's hard to beat.
Verdict: The best kids tablet, period. The replacement guarantee alone is worth the price.
7. Amazon Smart Thermostat
The Amazon Smart Thermostat ($60) is the cheapest smart thermostat from a major brand. It integrates with Alexa, supports scheduling, and has an Energy Star certification. Made by Honeywell under Amazon's brand.
Verdict: Impressive for $60. Lacks some features of the Nest and ecobee, but the value is undeniable.
8. Amazon Basics Furniture Line
This goes beyond electronics, but Amazon Basics makes office furniture including standing desks, monitor arms, and desk chairs. The Amazon Basics Monitor Arm ($28) is actually rebranded Ergotron (the premium brand) hardware at a fraction of the price.
Verdict: The monitor arm is a best-buy. It's literally Ergotron hardware.
9. Luna Game Controller
Amazon Luna is Amazon's cloud gaming service, and the Luna Controller ($40 on sale) connects directly to WiFi rather than Bluetooth, reducing latency for cloud gaming. It also works as a standard Bluetooth controller for PC and mobile gaming.
Verdict: Underrated controller. The WiFi-direct connection for Luna/cloud gaming is a genuine advantage.
10. Day 1 Editions (Experimental Products)
Amazon's "Day 1 Editions" program releases experimental products through an invitation-only system. Past products have included the Echo Frames (smart glasses), Echo Loop (smart ring), and various other experimental hardware. Some become mainstream products; others are quietly discontinued.
Verdict: Fun for early adopters, but availability is limited and longevity isn't guaranteed.
The Amazon Hardware Strategy
Amazon sells hardware as an ecosystem play. Most Amazon devices are sold at or below cost — the profit comes from Prime subscriptions, Alexa engagement, and Amazon shopping. This means you often get surprisingly good hardware at aggressive prices. The trade-off is deep integration with Amazon's ecosystem and data collection.
If you're already in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem, their hardware offers exceptional value. If privacy is a primary concern, the ecosystem integration may be a drawback rather than a benefit.
