The OLED TV market has split into two technologies: LG's traditional W-OLED (white OLED) and Samsung's QD-OLED (quantum dot OLED). The LG C4 and Samsung S95D represent the mainstream flagships of each technology. We placed them side-by-side in a controlled viewing room for two weeks of testing.
Brightness
Samsung S95D: QD-OLED achieves significantly higher peak brightness — approximately 1,300 nits in a 10% HDR window versus the LG C4's 850 nits. In a bright living room with windows, the Samsung maintains HDR impact that the LG cannot match.
LG C4: The C4 is bright enough for moderately lit rooms. In a dark home theater environment, the brightness difference is less noticeable because both TVs are viewed at lower brightness settings.
Winner: Samsung S95D, significantly. The brightness advantage is real and visible.
Color Volume
Samsung S95D: QD-OLED uses quantum dots instead of color filters, enabling the widest color volume of any TV technology. Colors maintain saturation at high brightness — a red sunset at peak brightness is still a deep, rich red on the Samsung. On the LG, colors desaturate slightly at high brightness.
LG C4: Color accuracy out of the box is excellent, with near-perfect DCI-P3 coverage. But the W-OLED color filter array inherently limits color volume compared to quantum dots.
Winner: Samsung S95D.
Black Level and Contrast
Both use self-emissive OLED pixels, meaning both achieve perfect blacks. In a perfectly dark room, a black scene looks identical on both TVs — completely black, with no backlight glow or gray haze. The infinite contrast ratio is the defining characteristic of OLED technology, and both TVs deliver it equally.
Winner: Tie.
Motion Handling
Both TVs offer 120Hz panels with near-instant pixel response times, making motion blur negligible. For sports and fast-paced gaming, both provide excellent motion clarity.
The Samsung's brightness advantage means fast-moving highlights in sports (a white hockey puck, a tennis ball) are more visible in bright rooms.
Winner: Samsung S95D in bright rooms. Tie in dark rooms.
Gaming
LG C4: Four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision gaming, and Game Optimizer dashboard. Input lag of 9.1ms in Game Mode. The C4 has been the gamer's TV for years.
Samsung S95D: Two HDMI 2.1 ports (of four total), VRR, ALLM, Game Mode. Input lag of approximately 9ms. Samsung Gaming Hub provides cloud gaming access.
Winner: LG C4 for having four full HDMI 2.1 ports. If you have both a PS5 and Xbox Series X, every port on the LG is fully capable. On the Samsung, you need to choose which console gets the HDMI 2.1 port.
Smart TV Platform
LG webOS: Mature, well-supported, but ad-heavy. All major streaming apps available. Settings can be confusing.
Samsung Tizen: Cleaner interface, equally comprehensive app support. Samsung Gaming Hub for cloud gaming. Samsung TV Plus provides free ad-supported channels.
Winner: Samsung Tizen, slightly.
Viewing Angles
Samsung S95D: QD-OLED maintains color accuracy at wider viewing angles. Off-axis viewing (30+ degrees) shows less color shift on the Samsung.
LG C4: Viewing angles are good for OLED but show slight color shift at extreme angles.
Winner: Samsung S95D.
Price (65-inch)
LG C4 65": $1,500 MSRP (frequently $1,300 on sale) Samsung S95D 65": $2,600 MSRP (rarely below $2,200)
The Samsung commands a $900-1,300 premium.
Winner: LG C4 for value.
