The mid-range tablet market offers a genuine choice in 2026. Apple's iPad Air M4 and Samsung's Galaxy Tab S10 FE target the same buyer: students, professionals, and media consumers who want premium features without flagship pricing. We used both for three weeks across note-taking, media consumption, productivity, and drawing.

    Display

Apple iPad Air M4: 11-inch Liquid Retina (IPS LCD), 2360x1640, 60Hz, 500 nits, P3 wide color. The display is sharp and color-accurate, but the 60Hz refresh rate is noticeable in 2026 — scrolling, writing, and general navigation feel less fluid than 120Hz competitors.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE: 10.9-inch AMOLED, 2304x1440, 90Hz, 600 nits, 100% DCI-P3. The AMOLED panel delivers deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and a smoother refresh rate than the iPad Air's LCD. For Netflix, YouTube, and media consumption, the Samsung display is visibly superior.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. The AMOLED display and higher refresh rate outclass the iPad Air's LCD.

    Stylus Experience

iPad Air M4 + Apple Pencil 2 ($129 extra): The Apple Pencil 2 is excellent — low latency, pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, and magnetic attachment for charging. But it costs $129 on top of the tablet price.

Galaxy Tab S10 FE + S Pen (included): The S Pen is included in the box — zero extra cost. It offers low latency, pressure sensitivity, and tilt detection. Samsung Notes provides excellent handwriting-to-text conversion and PDF annotation.

In our side-by-side drawing and note-taking tests, both styluses are excellent. The Apple Pencil has marginally lower latency, but the difference is imperceptible for note-taking and only noticeable to digital artists working at high precision.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. Including the stylus at no extra cost is a massive value advantage.

    Performance

iPad Air M4: Apple's M4 chip outperforms the Samsung's Exynos 1580 by a wide margin in benchmarks. For demanding tasks like video editing, 3D modeling, and complex Procreate illustrations, the iPad Air is significantly faster.

Galaxy Tab S10 FE: The Exynos 1580 handles everyday tasks smoothly — web browsing, note-taking, streaming, social media, and light productivity. It struggles with intensive tasks that the M4 handles effortlessly.

Winner: iPad Air M4, decisively. The M4 is a laptop-class chip in a tablet.

    App Ecosystem

iPad Air M4: iPadOS has the best tablet app ecosystem. Procreate, LumaFusion, GoodNotes, Notability, Affinity Photo, and hundreds of tablet-optimized productivity and creative apps. Stage Manager provides desktop-like multitasking.

Galaxy Tab S10 FE: The Android tablet app ecosystem has improved significantly. Samsung DeX provides a desktop-like experience with resizable windows. Core productivity apps are well-optimized. However, creative and professional apps remain less comprehensive than iPadOS.

Winner: iPad Air M4 for app quality and creative tools.

    Multitasking

iPad Air M4: Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over provide flexible multitasking. Running a browser alongside notes alongside a reference PDF works smoothly.

Galaxy Tab S10 FE: Samsung DeX mode transforms the tablet into a desktop-like environment. Resizable floating windows, a taskbar, and right-click support make DeX genuinely productive. It is more familiar to Windows users than iPadOS multitasking.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE for desktop-style productivity. iPad Air M4 for touch-first multitasking.

    Price

    iPad Air M4 (11-inch, 128GB): $599 + $129 for Apple Pencil 2 = $728 Galaxy Tab S10 FE (128GB, S Pen included): $449

The Samsung is $280 less with the stylus included. That is a significant difference.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE for value.

    The Verdict

Buy the iPad Air M4 if: You need the best performance, premium creative apps (Procreate, LumaFusion), or deep Apple ecosystem integration.

Buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE if: You want the best value, a superior display for media, an included stylus, and Android/Samsung ecosystem integration.

For students and casual users, the Tab S10 FE delivers more for less. For creative professionals, the iPad Air M4 justifies its premium through app quality and raw performance.
