Amazon's search results aren't a neutral ranking of the best products. They're the output of an algorithm called A9 (now evolved into its latest iteration) that optimizes for Amazon's revenue, not your satisfaction. Understanding how it works helps you find better products at better prices.
How Amazon Decides What You See
Sales Velocity
The single biggest ranking factor is how fast a product is selling. Products that sell more units rank higher, creating a self-reinforcing cycle: higher ranking leads to more visibility, which leads to more sales, which leads to higher ranking.
This means the "best" products aren't necessarily at the top — the best-marketed products are. A superior product with poor marketing sits on page 3 while an aggressively promoted inferior product dominates page 1.
Sponsored Products
The first 2-4 results for most searches are paid advertisements. They look nearly identical to organic results — the only difference is a small "Sponsored" label that most shoppers miss. Amazon generates over $40 billion annually from advertising, which means their incentive is to make ads as prominent and click-worthy as possible.
Conversion Rate
Products with higher click-to-purchase rates rank higher. This means products with better photos, more compelling titles, and lower prices rank higher regardless of actual quality. Review Volume (Not Just Rating)
A product with 10,000 reviews at 4.2 stars ranks higher than a product with 50 reviews at 4.8 stars. Volume signals popularity, and the algorithm favors popularity over quality. This penalizes newer, potentially better products.
Price Competitiveness
Amazon's algorithm favors competitively priced products. If a product's price is significantly higher than similar items, it gets deprioritized. Conversely, artificially low prices (loss-leaders) get algorithm boosts.
How to "Beat" the Algorithm
Skip Page 1
The products on page 1 paid to be there (sponsored), or they dominate through sales velocity. Page 2 and 3 results often include better-quality products from smaller brands that can't afford page 1 advertising.
Use Specific Search Terms
Generic searches like "wireless earbuds" return algorithm-optimized results dominated by advertisers. Specific searches like "Anker Soundcore wireless earbuds ANC" bypass the algorithm and take you directly to the product. Sort by "Avg. Customer Review"
Amazon defaults to "Featured" sorting, which is the algorithm's ranking. Switching to "Avg. Customer Review" sorting surfaces products that actual buyers rated highest. It's not perfect, but it reduces algorithm manipulation.
Filter Aggressively
Use Amazon's left sidebar filters for price range, brand, features, and star rating. Filtering narrows the pool and reduces the algorithm's ability to push promoted products.
Check "Frequently Bought Together"
The "Frequently Bought Together" section is based on actual purchase data, not advertising. It often reveals accessories and complementary products that other buyers found useful — crowd-sourced recommendations independent of the algorithm.
Understanding Amazon's Badges
"Amazon's Choice"
This badge is NOT an editorial recommendation. It's algorithmically assigned based on price, availability, shipping speed, and return rate. A product can be "Amazon's Choice" while having mediocre reviews and questionable quality. Never treat this badge as a quality indicator.
"Best Seller"
The Best Seller badge indicates the highest sales volume in a category. It updates hourly. A product can be the best seller because it's the cheapest option, not because it's the best option. The Anker 737 Power Bank earns its Best Seller status through genuine quality, but many Best Sellers earn it through price alone.
"Climate Pledge Friendly"
This badge indicates the product meets one or more sustainability certifications. It's legitimate but the threshold for qualification is lower than you might expect. Don't assume it means the product is meaningfully sustainable.
"Limited Time Deal"
This badge creates urgency but doesn't guarantee a good price. Always check price history before buying a "Limited Time Deal" — many are at or near the product's normal selling price.
The Price Manipulation Problem
Dynamic Pricing
Amazon changes prices on millions of products daily — sometimes multiple times per day. The price you see at 9 AM may differ from the price at 3 PM. The algorithm tests price sensitivity and adjusts in real time.
The "List Price" Fiction
The crossed-out "List Price" on Amazon is often a manufacturer's suggested retail price that no retailer has actually charged in months or years. A product "50% off" from a fictional list price is misleading but legal.
