GoPro defined the action camera category. DJI arrived as the disruptor. The Hero 13 and Action 5 represent each brand's latest effort to claim the action camera crown. We tested both in the environments where action cameras actually get used: underwater, on mountain bike handlebars, at the gym, and during travel.

    Video Quality

GoPro Hero 13: 5.3K at 60fps, 4K at 120fps. GP-Log and HLG color profiles for advanced color grading. The new 1/1.55-inch sensor captures more light than any previous GoPro, producing richer low-light footage. The HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization is exceptional.

DJI Action 5 Pro: 4K at 120fps with 10-bit D-Log M color. The 1/1.3-inch sensor (slightly larger than GoPro's) excels in low-light situations. RockSteady 3.0 plus HorizonSteady stabilization provides smooth, horizon-locked footage.

In daylight, both cameras produce virtually identical quality. In low light, the DJI's larger sensor captures slightly less noise. The GoPro's 5.3K resolution provides more cropping flexibility in post-production.

Winner: DJI Action 5 for low-light. GoPro Hero 13 for maximum resolution.

    Stabilization

Both cameras offer class-leading stabilization. We mounted both on a mountain bike handlebar and rode the same trail.

GoPro HyperSmooth 6.0: Incredibly smooth with minimal warping at the edges. Horizon lock maintains level footage during rolls up to 360 degrees.

DJI HorizonSteady: Equally smooth with slightly wider field-of-view retention during heavy stabilization. The horizon lock is responsive and handles aggressive movement well.

    Winner: Tie. Both are exceptional.

    Waterproofing

GoPro Hero 13: Waterproof to 33 feet (10m) without a housing.

DJI Action 5 Pro: Waterproof to 66 feet (20m) without a housing.

DJI doubles GoPro's depth rating, which matters for snorkeling and shallow diving. For surfing and water sports, both are more than sufficient.

Winner: DJI Action 5 for depth rating.

    Battery Life

GoPro Hero 13: 87 minutes at 4K/60fps. Removable battery with fast charging.

DJI Action 5 Pro: 160 minutes at 4K/60fps. The battery life is dramatically better — nearly double GoPro's. Removable battery.

Winner: DJI Action 5, decisively. Nearly double the recording time is a massive advantage.

    Front Screen

Both cameras include front-facing displays for selfie framing.

GoPro Hero 13: 1.4-inch front LCD. Adequate for framing but small.

DJI Action 5 Pro: 1.4-inch front OLED. Brighter, more vibrant, and easier to see in direct sunlight.

Winner: DJI Action 5 for display quality.

    Mounting and Accessories

GoPro: The GoPro mounting ecosystem is the industry standard. Third-party mounts are ubiquitous and affordable. The Hero 13 maintains backward compatibility with all existing GoPro mounts.

DJI: Uses a proprietary magnetic quick-release mount system. It is faster to attach and detach than GoPro's screw-based system, but the ecosystem of third-party mounts is smaller.

Winner: GoPro for mount ecosystem. DJI for mounting speed.

    App Experience

GoPro Quik: Provides auto-editing, manual editing, cloud storage (with subscription), and camera control. The auto-highlight feature creates shareable clips automatically.

DJI Mimo: Provides manual editing, camera control, and sharing. Less feature-rich than Quik but functional and well-designed.

    Winner: GoPro for app features.

    Price

    GoPro Hero 13: $400 DJI Action 5 Pro: $350

Winner: DJI Action 5 for price.

    The Verdict

Buy the GoPro Hero 13 if: You want the widest mounting ecosystem, 5.3K resolution for maximum editing flexibility, and the best companion app.

Buy the DJI Action 5 Pro if: You want dramatically better battery life, deeper waterproofing, and a lower price. For most action camera users, the DJI is the better value.

The DJI Action 5 Pro wins this comparison. The nearly double battery life, deeper waterproofing, and lower price outweigh GoPro's resolution and ecosystem advantages for the majority of buyers.
