Google Nest Ecosystem in 2026: Everything You Need to Know

As of July 2026, the Google Nest ecosystem is mid-transition from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home: the new $99.99 Google Home Speaker shipped June 25, 2026, the Nest Mini and Nest Audio were discontinued that same week, and Gemini for Home is in early access across 19 countries and 23 languages — a switch Google says is one-way. Around that core, the platform now runs on a redesigned Google Home app, a rebranded subscription (Google Home Premium, formerly Nest Aware, at $10 or $20 per month), and a hardware stack built around Matter and Thread.

The big shift: Gemini for Home replaces Assistant

Gemini for Home early access began rolling out to select US users on October 28, 2025, alongside a redesigned Google Home app with a three-tab layout (Home, Activity, Automations) and an "Ask Home" feature for natural-language search and automation creation. Per Google's support documentation, early access now covers 19 countries and 23 languages, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

Three things to know before opting in:

• It's free for the basics, paid for the headline features. Smart home control, media, alarms and timers, lists, general knowledge, and Continued Conversation cost nothing. Gemini Live requires a Google Home Premium subscription, and camera history search plus the Home Brief daily summary require the Advanced tier.
• It's a one-way door. Google's own wording: once a home moves to Gemini for Home, "it can't switch back to Google Assistant."
• Older hardware gets most of it. The full experience, including Gemini Live, runs on the Google Home Speaker, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Audio, and Nest Mini (2nd gen). Reception has been rocky. How-To Geek reports that reaction among longtime users on r/GoogleHome has been notably negative, with complaints about lost or regressed Assistant functionality — and reverting is difficult enough that it effectively requires creating a new home from scratch.

The Google Home Speaker is Google's first audio device built for Gemini: 360-degree sound, a light-ring underglow that shows when Gemini is listening, thinking, or responding, a mic mute toggle, and 10 selectable voices. It comes in Porcelain, Hazel, Jade, and Berry (Jade and Berry are US Google Store exclusives), and up to two units can pair with the Google TV Streamer for surround sound. It opened pre-orders June 17, 2026 and replaced both the Nest Mini and Nest Audio, whose end of production Google confirmed the same day.

Cameras: the October 2025 2K refresh

Google refreshed its camera line on October 1, 2025 with three wired 2K models: the Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen) at $99.99, Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen) at $149.99, and Nest Doorbell (3rd gen) at $179.99. All record at 2560x1440 with a 152-degree field of view — the Doorbell uses a 166-degree diagonal, 1:1 aspect ratio for head-to-toe and package views — and the new sensor takes in 120% more light for longer full-color operation at dawn and dusk. The Outdoor model is IP65-rated for -4°F to 104°F.

The battery cameras did not get the 2K treatment. Google's stated reason: wired cameras "present a way better experience" for Gemini features because they stay constantly powered. The company did not rule out future battery models, and the 2021 battery-powered Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell remain on sale at 1080p.

Thermostats: a North America flagship, a European exit

The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), launched August 2024, remains Google's flagship at $279.99 in the US ($379.99 in Canada) and ships with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen).

Europe is a different story. Per TechRadar, the 4th gen never came to the UK or Europe and never will; the 3rd-gen Learning Thermostat (2015) and Thermostat E (2018) are sold there only while supplies last. Google cited the diversity of European heating systems.

Owners of the oldest models got a harder cutoff: on October 25, 2025, the 1st-gen (2011), 2nd-gen (2012), and European 2nd-gen (2014) Learning Thermostats were unpaired and removed from the Nest and Google Home apps — no more remote control, notifications, or software and security updates. Subscriptions: Nest Aware is now Google Home Premium

Two useful wrinkles: Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) includes Home Premium Standard at no extra cost — upgradeable to Advanced for $10 more per month — and Google AI Ultra includes Advanced outright. Existing Nest Aware (2nd gen) subscribers billed through Google were converted automatically; subscriptions billed through partners such as ADT, AT&T, and Tata keep the Nest Aware branding.

Matter and Thread: the connective tissue

Google's stack is now fully Matter/Thread-centric. Per Google's Matter support page, five devices act as combined Matter hubs and Thread border routers: the Google Home Speaker, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K). Older speakers and displays — Nest Audio, Nest Mini, the original Nest Hub, Google Home, and Home Mini — work as Wi-Fi-only Matter hubs, and IPv6 must be enabled on your network either way.

The standard itself is moving toward Google's strengths: Matter 1.5, published November 20, 2025 by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, added native camera support (WebRTC live streaming, two-way talk, pan-tilt-zoom, privacy zones, event and continuous recording) plus closures, soil sensors, and expanded energy management.

The Nest Wifi Pro is still sold, but the older Nest Wifi and Google Wifi have vanished from the Google Store and are only available through third-party retailers.

The discontinuation record, honestly

Any honest guide to this ecosystem has to include the graveyard:

• April 8, 2024 — Nest Secure and Dropcam shut down entirely. Nest Secure owners were offered a free ADT Self Setup system (up to $485 value) or $200 in Google Store credit.
• March 2025 — the Nest Protect smoke/CO alarm and Nest x Yale Lock were discontinued. Existing units keep working and receiving security updates, and Nest Protects function through their roughly 10-year expiration dates.
• October 25, 2025 — 1st/2nd-gen Learning Thermostats lost all app and remote control.
• June 2026 — Nest Mini and Nest Audio ended production, replaced by the Google Home Speaker. Existing units stay fully supported, per Google.

The difference this cycle: Google named successors. The Nest Protect's designated replacement is the First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm ($129.99 at its March 2025 announcement, US and Canada), made by Resideo-owned First Alert; it appears in the Google Home app and interconnects with existing Nest Protects.
