Cloud storage has become essential infrastructure for modern work and personal life. Photos, documents, projects, and backups all need reliable, accessible, and affordable cloud storage. The four major platforms each have distinct strengths, and the best choice depends on your device ecosystem and primary use case.

    Pricing Comparison

    iCloud: 5GB free, 50GB $1/month, 200GB $3/month, 2TB $10/month, 6TB $30/month, 12TB $60/month.

    Google Drive (Google One): 15GB free (shared with Gmail), 100GB $2/month, 2TB $10/month, 5TB $25/month.

    OneDrive: 5GB free, 100GB $2/month, 1TB $7/month (includes Microsoft 365 Personal with Office apps).

    Dropbox: 2GB free, 2TB $12/month (Plus), 3TB $22/month (Essentials).

The standout value is OneDrive at $7/month for 1TB, which includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. If you need Office apps, OneDrive is effectively free cloud storage bundled with software you would buy anyway.

    Ecosystem Integration

iCloud: Seamless on Apple devices. Photos, documents, device backups, and keychain sync automatically. The experience on Windows is adequate but not great. No native Linux support.

Google Drive: Best cross-platform support. Works equally well on every OS through the browser and native apps. Deep integration with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides). The best choice for Android users and Google Workspace users.

OneDrive: Deep Windows integration — OneDrive sync is built into Windows 11. Good iOS and Android apps. The Microsoft 365 bundle makes it the best value for Office users.

Dropbox: Platform-neutral with excellent apps on every OS. The most reliable sync engine with the fewest conflicts. Professional teams often standardize on Dropbox for its reliability.

    Photo Storage

iCloud Photos: The best photo management for iPhone users. Photos sync, organize, and edit seamlessly across all Apple devices.

Google Photos: The best photo management for everyone else. AI-powered search, automatic organization, and editing tools. 15GB free storage (original quality) or included with Google One plans.

Both are dramatically better than OneDrive and Dropbox for photo management. If photo storage is your primary need, choose iCloud (Apple) or Google Photos (everyone else).

    File Sync Reliability

In our testing, all four services sync small files within seconds and large files proportionally to upload speed. Where they differ is conflict handling — what happens when the same file is edited on two devices before syncing.

Dropbox handles conflicts best, creating separate copies of both versions so nothing is lost. Google Drive and OneDrive sometimes silently overwrite changes. iCloud handles conflicts well within the Apple ecosystem but can lose changes from third-party apps.

    Our Recommendation

Apple ecosystem: iCloud 200GB or 2TB. The seamless integration with every Apple device is worth the platform lock-in.

Cross-platform or Android: Google One 2TB. Best cross-platform support and the strongest photo management.

Microsoft Office users: OneDrive 1TB with Microsoft 365. The Office apps alone justify the cost.

Teams needing reliable sync: Dropbox Plus 2TB. The best sync engine and conflict resolution for collaborative work.

For personal backup, keep a second copy on a portable external SSD to maintain the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 off-site (the cloud).
