AirTag vs Tile vs Samsung SmartTag: Best Luggage Tracker for Travel

Lost luggage is stressful but preventable. We compare the three major Bluetooth trackers for keeping tabs on your bags during air travel.

Airlines mishandled roughly 7.4 bags per 1,000 passengers in 2025. If you check luggage, a Bluetooth tracker lets you see exactly where your bag is — on the carousel, on the plane, or still sitting at your departure airport. The three main options are Apple AirTag, Tile, and Samsung SmartTag. Here is how they compare for travel use.

Network Size: The Most Important Factor

A Bluetooth tracker's usefulness depends entirely on the size of its finding network. When your tracker is out of your personal Bluetooth range, it relies on nearby devices from other users to relay its location.

Apple AirTag: Uses the Find My network — over one billion active Apple devices worldwide. In practice, this means your AirTag reports its location within minutes in any populated area, including airports, hotels, and city centers. The Apple AirTag 4-Pack is the best value at roughly $80 for four.

Samsung SmartTag 2: Uses the SmartThings network — roughly 200-300 million Samsung Galaxy devices. Coverage is good in urban areas but noticeably thinner than Apple's network in rural and suburban locations.

Tile: Uses its own proprietary network of Tile users plus integration with Amazon Sidewalk (Echo and Ring devices). The combined network is decent but still significantly smaller than Apple's.

    Precision Finding

AirTag and SmartTag 2 both support Ultra-Wideband (UWB) precision finding, which gives you directional guidance when you are within Bluetooth range — your phone shows an arrow pointing toward the tracker with distance in feet. This is extremely useful for finding a bag on a crowded carousel or locating a suitcase in a hotel room.

Tile does not offer UWB precision finding in most of its models, relying instead on Bluetooth signal strength estimates.

    Airline Compatibility

All three trackers are airline-approved for both carry-on and checked luggage. Major airlines including United, Delta, and American have confirmed that Bluetooth trackers comply with FAA regulations for personal electronic devices in luggage.

    Battery Life

AirTag uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery lasting about one year. SmartTag 2 also uses a replaceable CR2032. Tile models vary — some have replaceable batteries while others have sealed batteries lasting about three years before the entire unit needs replacing.

For frequent travelers, replaceable batteries are preferable. You can swap the battery in 30 seconds before a trip.

    Our Recommendation

If you own an iPhone, the AirTag is the clear winner. The Find My network's size advantage is massive and directly translates to faster, more reliable location updates. For Samsung users, the SmartTag 2 is the natural choice with good network coverage and excellent integration with Galaxy phones. Tile is the best cross-platform option if your household mixes iPhone and Android users.

Put the tracker in your checked bag, not in an outer pocket where it could be removed. Inside a shoe or wrapped in clothing works well. Enable notifications so your phone alerts you when the bag arrives at the carousel.
