Sony WH-1000XM5 vs AirPods Max: One Year Later

After twelve months of daily use, here's how Sony's flagship and Apple's premium headphones have held up in comfort, sound quality, and noise cancellation.

Most headphone reviews are written after a week of use. That's enough time to form first impressions but nowhere near enough to evaluate real-world durability, comfort over thousands of hours, and whether those fancy features actually stay useful. We've been wearing both the Sony WH-1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max daily for a full year. Here's the honest breakdown.

    Build Quality After 12 Months

The AirPods Max still look almost new. The aluminum ear cups resist scratches, and the mesh headband hasn't stretched or discolored. Apple's build quality justifies some of the price premium. The only annoyance is condensation inside the ear cups during workouts — a known issue Apple has never addressed.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 tells a different story. The synthetic leather ear pads started showing wear around month eight. A slight crack appeared on the right pad by month ten. Replacement pads cost $30, which is reasonable, but it's maintenance the AirPods Max doesn't require. On the plus side, the XM5 headband remains tight and comfortable — no loosening over time.

Sound Quality: Still Close, But Different

The AirPods Max delivers a warmer, more bass-forward sound signature that works beautifully for pop, hip-hop, and movie soundtracks. Sony's XM5 leans neutral-to-bright, which is better for acoustic music, podcasts, and critical listening. Neither has degraded sonically — drivers don't wear out from normal use.

Sony's LDAC codec support remains a meaningful advantage for Android users streaming from Tidal or Apple Music lossless. The AirPods Max is limited to AAC over Bluetooth, which sounds fine but leaves bandwidth on the table.

    Noise Cancellation: Sony Still Wins

After a year, the XM5's noise cancellation remains the best we've tested. It blocks low-frequency airplane drone and mid-frequency office chatter equally well. The AirPods Max is excellent but lets through slightly more mid-range noise, especially in open office environments.

Both headphones' transparency modes work well. Apple's is more natural-sounding. Sony's is more adjustable with the Headphones Connect app.

    Comfort for All-Day Wear

This is where the year of testing matters most. The AirPods Max weighs 384 grams. The XM5 weighs 250 grams. After four hours, that 134-gram difference becomes noticeable. After six hours, it becomes significant. For all-day work-from-home use, the XM5 is meaningfully more comfortable.

The AirPods Max's mesh headband distributes weight better than any padded headband, which helps for the first few hours. But physics eventually wins — the heavier headphone creates more neck fatigue.

    Battery and Ecosystem Lock-In

The XM5 delivers 30 hours of battery life consistently, even after a year. The AirPods Max gets about 18 hours, down slightly from the original 20. Apple's lack of a power button (it relies on the case for sleep mode) remains a design flaw — forget the case and your battery drains overnight.

If you're deep in the Apple ecosystem, the AirPods Max's seamless switching between iPhone, iPad, and Mac is genuinely useful. Sony's multipoint connection works with any two Bluetooth devices regardless of brand, which is more universally practical.

    The Verdict After One Year

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better value and the better daily headphone for most people. It's lighter, has better noise cancellation, longer battery life, and costs $150 less. The AirPods Max makes sense only if you prioritize Apple ecosystem integration and premium build materials above everything else.
