Six months of daily use reveals what early reviews couldn't. Here's our updated assessment of Sony's flagship noise-cancelling headphones.

    What Held Up

The noise cancellation is still best-in-class. After testing AirPods Max, Bose QC Ultra, and Sennheiser Momentum 4 alongside them, the XM5s consistently block the most ambient noise. The auto-optimization that adjusts ANC based on your environment works flawlessly — you don't think about it.

Sound quality remains excellent for a wireless ANC headphone. The V1 processor handles everything from podcasts to complex orchestral music with clarity. LDAC support means high-res audio over Bluetooth sounds genuinely better than standard codecs.

Battery life holds steady at 28-30 hours real-world (rated 30). Fast charging still delivers 3 hours of playback from a 3-minute charge.

    What Didn't

The Sony WH-1000XM5 headband cushion has flattened noticeably. It's still comfortable but not as plush as day one. The synthetic leather on the earpads shows light wear — no peeling, but the texture has smoothed out.

The case is still unnecessarily large because the headphones don't fold. This is a genuine annoyance for daily commuters with limited bag space.

Multipoint Bluetooth works well 90% of the time, but occasionally fails to switch between phone and laptop cleanly. A quick off/on fixes it, but it happens 2-3 times per week.

    The Verdict at 6 Months

Still the headphones we'd recommend to most people. The Bose QC Ultra sound slightly warmer, and the AirPods Max have better build quality, but neither matches the XM5's combination of ANC performance, comfort, sound, and battery life at this price.

Score: 9.2/10 (down from 9.5 at launch — minor durability concerns)
