Price Match Policies Explained: Every Major Retailer Compared
Price matching can save you hundreds, but every retailer has different rules. Here is a clear comparison of policies at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and more.

Price matching means a retailer will match a lower price from a competitor, so you can buy locally (or from your preferred store) without paying more. Every major electronics retailer offers some form of price matching, but the rules, exclusions, and processes vary significantly.
Best Buy
Best Buy price matches Amazon, Walmart, Target, Costco, and other major retailers on identical items (same model number, color, and condition). They also match BestBuy.com prices in-store. The match applies at the time of purchase and for 15 days after purchase.
Exclusions include marketplace sellers (Amazon third-party, Walmart marketplace), open-box items, refurbished items, membership pricing (Costco pricing requires a Costco membership), and limited-time deals that have expired.
To request a price match, show the lower price on your phone to a Best Buy associate or contact online support. In-store matches are processed immediately. Online orders require a chat or phone call.
Target
Target matches Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, and several other retailers. They also match Target.com prices in-store. The price match window extends to 14 days after purchase.
Target's advantage: if you have a Target RedCard, the 5% discount stacks on top of the price match. So a $100 item price-matched from Amazon becomes $95 at Target — cheaper than anywhere.
Target is strict about identical items and will not match marketplace sellers, out-of-stock items, or prices that require a membership to access.
Walmart
Walmart no longer price matches competitors in-store — they discontinued this policy in 2020. However, they will match Walmart.com prices in-store. If an item is cheaper on Walmart.com than on the shelf, show the website price to a cashier or use the Walmart app to verify.
For online purchases, Walmart's prices are algorithmically set and often match or beat competitors automatically. Use price tracking tools to verify.
Amazon
Amazon does not officially price match competitors. However, their pricing algorithms aggressively track competitor prices and adjust automatically. Products frequently drop to match Best Buy, Walmart, and other retailers within hours.
Amazon's Subscribe & Save program offers 5-15% off recurring purchases of eligible items. Clip coupons on product pages for additional savings. Warehouse deals provide open-box pricing that often beats competitors.
Costco
Costco does not price match competitors but will refund the difference on their own price changes within 30 days. Their return policy is legendary — virtually unlimited returns on most electronics with the exception of a 90-day window on specific categories (TVs, computers, phones, tablets).
Micro Center
Micro Center price matches Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and other authorized retailers on in-stock items. Their prices on CPUs, GPUs, and storage are often already the lowest available, making Micro Center the best electronics retailer for computer components.
How to Price Match Effectively
Save time by checking prices on Google Shopping before visiting a store. Take screenshots of lower prices as evidence — prices can change while you are talking to an associate. Be polite but firm — price matching is store policy, not a favor. If an associate refuses a valid match, ask for a manager. Know the specific policy rules so you can cite them if questioned.
