Pet DNA Test Kits: What They Reveal About Your Pet's Health and Breed

Pet DNA tests identify breed composition, genetic health risks, and even relatives. We compare the leading tests and explain what the results actually mean.

Pet DNA testing has evolved from a novelty ("what breed is my mutt?") into a genuinely useful health tool. Modern tests screen for hundreds of genetic health conditions, identify breed-specific risks, and provide actionable information for veterinary care.

    How Pet DNA Tests Work

You receive a kit with a cheek swab (or sometimes a blood collection card). Swab the inside of your pet's cheek for 30 seconds, seal the sample, and mail it to the lab. Results arrive in 2-4 weeks via an online dashboard or app.

The lab extracts DNA from the sample and compares it to reference databases of breed genotypes and genetic markers for known health conditions. The accuracy of breed identification depends on the size and diversity of the reference database.

Embark: Best Overall Dog DNA Test

The Embark Breed + Health Kit tests for 350+ breeds, types, and varieties plus 260+ genetic health conditions. It provides the most comprehensive health screening of any consumer dog DNA test. Health results include carrier status for conditions like degenerative myelopathy, exercise-induced collapse, and MDR1 drug sensitivity.

MDR1 drug sensitivity alone justifies the test for mixed-breed dogs. Dogs with the MDR1 mutation can have severe, sometimes fatal reactions to common medications including ivermectin and some anesthetics. Knowing your dog's MDR1 status before any procedure is potentially life-saving.

Embark also provides a relative finder that connects you with other tested dogs who share DNA — your dog's siblings, parents, and cousins. At $150-200, Embark is the most expensive consumer test but also the most comprehensive.

    Wisdom Panel: Best Budget Option

Wisdom Panel Essential ($100) tests for 350+ breeds and 25+ genetic health conditions. The Premium version ($160) adds 200+ health tests. Breed identification accuracy is comparable to Embark for common breeds but less reliable for rare breeds.

Wisdom Panel also offers a cat DNA test — one of the few available consumer cat DNA products. It identifies breed composition and screens for 45+ health conditions in cats.

    What Results Mean Practically

Breed composition helps you understand behavior tendencies, exercise needs, and breed-specific health risks. A dog that is 40% Border Collie will likely need more mental stimulation than average. A dog with Labrador heritage is at higher risk for hip dysplasia and obesity.

Genetic health results fall into three categories: clear (no copies of the mutation), carrier (one copy — typically no symptoms but can pass to offspring), and at risk (two copies — may develop the condition). Share results with your veterinarian to inform screening schedules and preventive care.

    Limitations

DNA tests cannot diagnose existing conditions — they identify genetic predispositions. A dog testing "at risk" for a condition may never develop it, and a dog testing "clear" may develop the condition through non-genetic causes.

Breed identification for highly mixed dogs becomes less reliable beyond three generations. A dog with eight or more breeds in its background may show results with low-confidence breed percentages. The tests are most accurate for dogs with two or three identifiable breeds.

    Is It Worth It?

For mixed-breed dogs adopted from shelters, absolutely. The health screening information alone is worth the cost — knowing about drug sensitivities, cardiac risks, and orthopedic predispositions helps your vet provide better preventive care. For purebred dogs from reputable breeders who already screen parent dogs, the value is lower since breed-specific risks are already known.
