Maximize Your Trade-In Value: Selling Old Tech for Top Dollar

That old phone, laptop, or tablet sitting in a drawer is losing value every day. Here is how to get the best price whether you trade in, sell, or recycle.

Electronics depreciate rapidly. A phone loses 30-50% of its value in the first year and 60-80% by year two. The sooner you sell your old device, the more you recover. But where and how you sell makes a huge difference in what you receive.

Trade-In Programs: Easiest but Lowest Value

Apple Trade-In, Samsung Trade-In, Google Store Trade-In, and Amazon Trade-In all accept old devices for credit toward new purchases. They are the easiest option — you get an instant quote, ship the device, and receive credit. But convenience comes at a cost: trade-in values are typically 20-40% below what you could get selling directly.

Apple's program is the most generous of the manufacturer trade-ins. A two-year-old iPhone in good condition might get $200-300 from Apple versus $50-100 from Amazon Trade-In.

Best Buy trade-in is competitive and offers store credit usable on anything they sell. They accept a wider range of devices including tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, and smart watches. Check bestbuy.com/trade-in for instant quotes.

    Selling Directly: Maximum Value

Selling directly to a buyer on eBay, Swappa, or Facebook Marketplace nets the highest return. Swappa specializes in electronics and verifies that devices are functional before listing — buyers trust the platform, which means your device sells faster and at higher prices.

eBay reaches the widest audience and works best for less common devices (older models, niche electronics, accessories). Facebook Marketplace is best for local sales where you can avoid shipping costs and fees.

    Preparing Your Device for Sale

Factory reset your device after backing up your data. Remove all accounts (iCloud, Google, Samsung) — failure to remove accounts makes the device unusable by the buyer and will result in returns. Clean the device thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and isopropyl alcohol.

Include all original accessories and packaging if you have them. Complete sets sell for 10-20% more than bare devices. Take clear, well-lit photos showing all sides of the device including any scratches or wear.

    Timing Your Sale

Sell immediately before or after new model announcements. When Apple announces a new iPhone in September, the current model's resale value drops 20% overnight. Sell your old phone the week before the announcement for maximum value.

If you miss the pre-announcement window, sell within two weeks of the new model's release. Demand for the previous generation remains high as budget-conscious buyers look for deals. After a month, prices stabilize at their new, lower level.

What to Do With Worthless Devices

Devices too old to sell can be recycled responsibly. Best Buy accepts any electronics for free recycling. Apple Stores recycle any Apple device. The Amazon trade-in program accepts old Kindles and tablets for a 20% discount on new devices even when the device has no standalone trade-in value.

Do not throw electronics in the trash — they contain toxic materials and are illegal to landfill in many states. Free recycling is available in every US state through manufacturer and retailer programs.
