Why Matter-Compatible Devices Are Worth Waiting For

Matter promises to end smart home fragmentation. Here's what it delivers today, what's still coming, and why your next device purchase should be Matter-certified.

For years, the smart home ecosystem has been fragmented. Buy a device for Alexa and it might not work with HomeKit. Choose a Google-compatible lock and discover it does not integrate with your SmartThings hub. Matter was created to end this fragmentation, and in 2026, it is finally delivering on that promise.

    What Matter Actually Is

Matter is an open connectivity standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly the Zigbee Alliance) with backing from Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung — the four companies that collectively control nearly every major smart home platform.

A Matter-certified device works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings simultaneously, out of the box, without brand-specific bridges or workarounds. Buy one smart plug and it appears in all four platforms. Control it from whichever app or voice assistant you prefer. Switch ecosystems later without replacing hardware.

Matter runs over two transport protocols: WiFi (for high-bandwidth devices like cameras) and Thread (for low-power devices like sensors and bulbs). It does not replace WiFi or Thread — it sits on top of them as an application layer that standardizes how devices communicate.

    What Works Well Today

Lighting is Matter's strongest category in 2026. Smart bulbs and switches from Nanoleaf, Eve, Philips Hue (via bridge update), IKEA, and others work seamlessly across platforms. Set up a Nanoleaf Essentials bulb and it appears simultaneously in Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa without separate configuration for each platform.

Smart plugs and outlets from multiple manufacturers work reliably with Matter. The Eve Energy smart plug is a standout — Thread-based, energy-monitoring, and works perfectly with all four platforms.

Sensors including door/window, motion, and temperature sensors are well-supported. Aqara, Eve, and Nanoleaf all offer Matter-certified sensors that integrate across ecosystems.

Locks and thermostats have growing but more limited Matter support. Yale and Schlage have released Matter-over-Thread locks, and Ecobee supports Matter for its thermostats.

    What Is Still Coming

Cameras are the biggest gap. Matter support for cameras was not included in the initial specification and is still being developed. Once camera support arrives, it will enable a single camera feed to appear in all platforms — a significant improvement over the current situation where each camera brand locks you into its own app and ecosystem.

Robot vacuums received Matter support in a recent specification update, but manufacturer adoption is still in early stages. iRobot and Roborock have announced Matter support for upcoming models.

Energy management features — including EV charger control, solar inverter monitoring, and battery storage management — are on the Matter roadmap but not yet implemented. These will be particularly valuable for homeowners managing home energy systems.

Why You Should Wait for Matter

    Future-Proofing

A Matter device works today and will work with whatever ecosystem dominates in five years. If you switch from Android to iPhone (or vice versa), your Matter devices migrate with you. If a new smart home platform emerges, it will support Matter because the industry has collectively agreed on the standard.

Non-Matter devices lock you in. A Zigbee device that only works with SmartThings becomes useless if Samsung discontinues SmartThings. A WiFi device that only works with its proprietary app becomes a paperweight when the company goes bankrupt or shuts down its cloud service. Matter eliminates this risk.

    Multi-Admin

Matter supports multi-admin, meaning a single device can be controlled by multiple platforms simultaneously. Your Matter smart lock can be managed by both Apple Home (for the iPhone user in the household) and Google Home (for the Android user) at the same time. No compromises, no choosing sides.

    Simplified Setup

Matter devices use a QR code or NFC tap for setup. Scan the code with your preferred smart home app and the device is configured. No creating accounts with the manufacturer, no downloading a separate app, no complex pairing procedures. This dramatically reduces setup friction, especially for less technical users.

    When Not to Wait

If you need a device today and no Matter-certified option exists in that category, buy what works now. Waiting indefinitely for a Matter-certified robot vacuum or security camera when you need one today is not practical.

Also, some non-Matter devices offer features that Matter does not yet standardize. Advanced camera features (person recognition, package detection, vehicle identification), complex thermostat learning algorithms, and multi-zone audio are all functionality that extends beyond Matter's current scope. If those features are important to you, buy the best device for the job regardless of Matter certification.

    The Bottom Line

Matter has crossed the tipping point from "promising standard" to "practical reality." The device selection is broad enough for most smart home needs, the major platforms all support it, and the ecosystem is growing monthly. Every non-Matter device you buy today is one you may need to replace later when Matter becomes the expected baseline. For most categories — lighting, sensors, plugs, and switches — the Matter option is already the best choice, regardless of which ecosystem you use.
