Sonos makes excellent multi-room speakers, but a whole-home setup costs $1,000+ easily. If you want synchronized music across rooms without the Sonos tax, several alternatives deliver comparable results at a fraction of the cost.
Option 1: Google Cast / Chromecast Built-In
Google's casting protocol is built into dozens of affordable speakers, soundbars, and streaming devices. Any speaker with "Chromecast built-in" can be grouped with other Cast-enabled speakers for perfectly synchronized playback.
How to set it up:
- Buy two or more speakers with Chromecast built-in. Budget options include the JBL Flip 6 (portable, $100 each) or the Google Nest Audio ($80 each, frequently on sale for $50).
- Open the Google Home app on your phone. Each speaker appears as a device.
- Tap the "+" icon and select "Create speaker group." Name it something like "Whole House" or "Downstairs."
- Cast music from Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, or any Cast-supported app to the group.
The synchronization is impressively tight — less than 1ms offset between speakers. You can adjust individual speaker volumes within the group, which is essential when rooms are different sizes.
Pros: Cheapest option, works with many speaker brands, excellent app support. Cons: Requires WiFi (no Bluetooth fallback), Google ecosystem dependency.
Option 2: Amazon Echo Speakers with Multi-Room Music
If you're already using Alexa, every Echo speaker supports multi-room music groups. Even the $30 Echo Pop can join a group.
Setup is similar to Google: open the Alexa app, create a "Multi-Room Music" group, add your Echo devices, and play music to the group by saying "Alexa, play jazz everywhere" or selecting the group in the app.
Amazon's synchronization is slightly less tight than Google Cast — you might notice a 10-20ms offset if you stand between two rooms, but it's not noticeable during normal listening. The real advantage is that you can mix and match Echo devices of different sizes and prices. A $230 Echo Studio in the living room paired with $30 Echo Pops in bedrooms creates a tiered system that sounds great where it matters and adequate elsewhere.
Pros: Voice control is natural, works with most streaming services, affordable entry point. Cons: Amazon ecosystem lock-in, sound quality on cheap Echos is mediocre.
Option 3: Apple AirPlay 2
If your household runs on Apple devices, AirPlay 2 delivers the highest-quality multi-room audio. Any AirPlay 2 speaker can be grouped with other AirPlay 2 speakers from the Home app or Control Center.
The challenge is cost. AirPlay 2 speakers tend to be more expensive than Google Cast or Alexa equivalents. However, you can add AirPlay 2 to any speaker with a Belkin SoundForm Connect adapter ($30), which adds AirPlay 2 to speakers with a 3.5mm or optical input. This lets you repurpose existing speakers and bookshelf stereos.
Pros: Best audio quality, seamless Apple integration, Siri support. Cons: Expensive native speakers, limited to Apple ecosystem for control.
The Hybrid Approach
The smartest setup combines approaches. Use a Google Cast or AirPlay 2 speaker in the living room and kitchen where sound quality matters, then place cheap Echo dots or Google Nest Minis in bedrooms and bathrooms where background audio is enough. Most streaming services let you play on multiple devices simultaneously.

What About Bluetooth Multi-Room?
Some Bluetooth speakers support "party mode" linking (JBL Connect+, Sony Party Connect), but Bluetooth multi-room has serious limitations: range is 30 feet max, synchronization is inconsistent, and you can only link speakers from the same brand. WiFi-based solutions are vastly superior for permanent multi-room setups.
