Gaming for Kids: Age-Appropriate Consoles, Games, and Safety Settings

Gaming can be creative, social, and educational — or a source of inappropriate content and excessive screen time. Here is how to set up gaming right for children.

Video games are the dominant entertainment medium for kids, and managed properly, they offer genuine benefits — problem-solving, creativity, hand-eye coordination, and social connection with friends. Managed poorly, they become a source of inappropriate content, excessive screen time, and unmonitored online interactions.

Choosing the Right Console by Age

Ages 4-7: Nintendo Switch Lite: The most family-friendly gaming platform with the best library of age-appropriate games. Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Kirby are all E-rated and engaging for young children. The Switch Lite at around $200 is the most affordable entry point.

Ages 8-12: Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5: The full Nintendo Switch adds TV output for family gaming sessions and Joy-Con controllers that enable 2-player games. The PS5 has a broader game library that includes age-appropriate titles alongside more mature games — parental controls become important here.

Ages 13+: Any platform: Teenagers can handle any console with appropriate parental oversight. Xbox and PlayStation both have excellent parental control systems. PC gaming through Steam offers the widest game library with Steam Family View for content restrictions.

    Essential Parental Controls

Nintendo Switch: Settings > Parental Controls (or use the Parental Controls app on your phone). Restrict games by ESRB rating, set play time limits, restrict online communication, and require a PIN for restricted actions.

PlayStation 5: Create a child account under your family manager. Set age restrictions, spending limits, communication restrictions, and play time limits through Settings > Family and Parental Controls.

Xbox: The Xbox Family Settings app provides the best parental control experience across any console. Set screen time limits, content restrictions, friend request approvals, and spending limits from your phone.

    Games Worth Recommending

Minecraft (E10+): The most popular game for kids for good reason. Creative mode is an open-ended building sandbox with no violence. Survival mode adds challenge without graphic content. The Minecraft for Nintendo Switch runs well and supports local multiplayer.

Super Mario games (E): The entire Mario franchise is designed for all ages with creative level design, cooperative play options, and zero objectionable content.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (E): A gentle life simulation where players build and decorate an island. No combat, no time pressure, and an emphasis on creativity and community.

LEGO games (E10+): LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Harry Potter, and other licensed LEGO games offer cooperative gameplay with gentle humor and no real violence.

    Online Safety

Online multiplayer introduces risks that single-player games do not — voice chat with strangers, text communication, and exposure to player behavior that game ratings do not account for.

For children under 13, disable voice chat and text communication with non-friends. Restrict friend requests to require parental approval. For games with user-generated content (Roblox, Minecraft servers), monitor the servers your child joins.

For teenagers, shift from restriction to education. Discuss online behavior expectations, the permanence of online communication, and how to handle toxic players (mute, block, report).

    The Play Time Balance

The AAP does not set a specific hour limit for gaming but recommends that gaming should not displace sleep, physical activity, homework, or in-person social interaction. A practical approach: gaming is allowed after homework and chores are complete, stops 30 minutes before bedtime, and is balanced by outdoor or active play.
