Bluetooth headphones stuck in pairing limbo — not connecting, not showing up, or showing as 'paired but not connected.' Here's the complete fix guide.

Bluetooth pairing should be simple: hold a button, tap a name, done. In practice, Bluetooth can be maddening. If your headphones won't pair, show as "paired but not connected," or won't appear in the device list, here are the fixes.
Fix 1: Put Headphones in Pairing Mode (Properly)
The most common issue: the headphones aren't actually in pairing mode. Turning on headphones is NOT the same as putting them in pairing mode. Most headphones need a specific action to enter discoverable/pairing mode:
- Over-ear headphones: Hold the power button for 5-7 seconds (past the normal power-on) until an LED flashes rapidly or alternates colors (usually blue/red)
- True wireless earbuds: Place both earbuds in the case, then open the case lid. Some require holding a button on the case for 3-5 seconds
- Sony WH-1000XM5: Hold power button for 7+ seconds until you hear "Bluetooth pairing"
- AirPods: Place in case, open lid, press and hold the button on the back of the case until the light flashes white
The Sony WH-1000XM5 announces "Bluetooth pairing" audibly when in discovery mode — listen for this confirmation.
Fix 2: Forget the Device and Re-Pair
If headphones were previously paired and now won't connect:
On iPhone
Settings → Bluetooth → tap the "i" next to the headphone name → "Forget This Device" → re-pair from scratch.
On Android
Settings → Connected Devices → Previously Connected → tap the headphone → "Forget" → re-pair.
On Windows
Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → find the headphone → "Remove Device" → re-pair.
On Mac
System Settings → Bluetooth → hover over the headphone → click "X" to remove → re-pair.
Fix 3: Reset the Headphones
If forgetting and re-pairing doesn't work, factory reset the headphones. This clears all stored pairings:
- Sony WH-1000XM5: Hold power button + NC/Ambient button for 7 seconds
- Bose QC Ultra: Hold power button + Bluetooth button for 10 seconds
- AirPods: Place in case → hold the button on the back for 15 seconds until the light flashes amber then white
- Samsung Galaxy Buds: In the Galaxy Wearable app → Earbuds Settings → Reset
After resetting, the headphones enter fresh pairing mode as if they're brand new.
Fix 4: Clear Paired Device List on Headphones
Bluetooth headphones can only remember a limited number of paired devices (typically 7-8). If the list is full, they won't pair with new devices. A factory reset (Fix 3) clears this list. Alternatively, some headphones let you manually remove pairings through their companion app.
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless lets you manage paired devices in the Smart Control app, removing old pairings without a full reset.
Fix 5: Restart Bluetooth on Your Phone/Computer
Toggle Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, toggle it back on. On iPhones, also try toggling Airplane Mode on and off.
For persistent issues, restart the device entirely. A phone restart clears the Bluetooth stack and resolves many pairing bugs.
Fix 6: Check for Interference
Bluetooth pairing is more susceptible to interference than an established connection. During pairing, keep the headphones within 3 feet of the device and away from:
- Other active Bluetooth devices
- WiFi routers
- USB 3.0 devices
- Microwave ovens
Fix 7: Update Everything
Update your phone's operating system and the headphone's firmware (via the manufacturer's app). Bluetooth compatibility patches are common in both phone OS updates and headphone firmware.
The Apple AirPods Pro 2 update firmware automatically when connected to an iPhone, but you can verify the current version in Settings → Bluetooth → AirPods → "i" → Version.

Fix 8: Windows-Specific Issues
Windows has well-documented Bluetooth pairing problems:
- Open Services (Win+R, type services.msc) → find "Bluetooth Support Service" → Restart it
- Open Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click Bluetooth adapter → "Update Driver"
- If using a USB Bluetooth adapter, try a different USB port (avoid USB 3.0 ports)
- Disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Bluetooth adapter's Power Management properties
Fix 9: "Paired but Not Connected"
This infuriating state means the devices recognize each other but can't establish an audio connection.
Fixes:
- Forget the device on both the phone AND the headphones (reset the headphones)
- Re-pair from scratch
- If using multiple Bluetooth profiles (audio + phone), ensure both profiles are connected in Bluetooth settings
- Check if the headphones are connected to a different device — many headphones only maintain one active connection. Disconnect from other devices first.
Fix 10: The Nuclear Option
If nothing else works:
- Reset the headphones to factory
- Reset network settings on your phone (iPhone: Settings → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings)
- Restart both devices
- Pair in a different location (away from all interference)
- If this fails, the Bluetooth radio in the headphones or phone may be defective — contact the manufacturer
