AirPods disconnecting randomly is one of the most common Apple support complaints. The good news: it's almost always fixable without replacing them. Work through these fixes in order.
Fix 1: Clean the AirPods and Case (5 Minutes)
Debris in the AirPods or charging case prevents proper electrical contact, which affects both charging and Bluetooth connection. If an AirPod isn't charging fully, its battery dies mid-use — which looks like a disconnection.
Clean the AirPods: Use a dry, lint-free cloth. For the speaker mesh, use a dry soft-bristled brush. For stubborn wax, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, applied carefully.
Clean the case: Use a dry cotton swab to clean the Lightning/USB-C port and the AirPod charging contacts inside the case. Compressed air can dislodge debris from the hinge area.
Fix 2: Check Battery Health
Open your AirPods case near your iPhone and check the battery widget. If one AirPod is at 100% and the other is at 10%, the low one isn't charging properly (dirty contacts — see Fix 1) or its battery is degraded.
For AirPods Pro 2, go to Settings → Bluetooth → [AirPods] → tap the "i" → scroll down to check battery health information. If battery health is below 80%, the battery needs replacement (Apple charges $49 per AirPod or $79 for the case).
Fix 3: Update AirPods Firmware
AirPods update firmware automatically, but you can ensure the latest version is installed:
- Connect AirPods to your iPhone
- Go to Settings → General → About → [AirPods name]
- Note the firmware version
- Check Apple's support page for the latest version
- To force an update: place AirPods in the case, connect the case to a charger, and keep your iPhone nearby with WiFi on. Wait 30 minutes.
Firmware updates frequently fix connectivity issues.
Fix 4: Forget and Re-Pair
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap the "i" next to your AirPods
- Tap "Forget This Device"
- Put AirPods in the case, close the lid, wait 30 seconds
- Open the lid near your iPhone
- Follow the pairing prompts
This clears any corrupted pairing data and creates a fresh connection.
Fix 5: Reset Network Settings
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This clears all Bluetooth pairings, WiFi passwords, and VPN settings. You'll need to re-enter WiFi passwords and re-pair all Bluetooth devices.
This nuclear option fixes persistent Bluetooth issues caused by corrupted network stack data.
Fix 6: Disable Automatic Switching
If you have multiple Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac), AirPods automatically switch between them based on which device is producing audio. This feature sometimes causes disconnections when it switches unexpectedly.
Settings → Bluetooth → [AirPods] → "i" → Connect to This iPhone → "When Last Connected to This iPhone" (instead of "Automatically"). Repeat on your iPad and Mac for those devices.
Fix 7: Check for Bluetooth Interference
AirPods use Bluetooth 5.3, which is robust but not immune to interference. Common sources:
- WiFi routers (especially when positioned near your head/desk)
- Microwave ovens in use
- USB 3.0 devices (emit 2.4 GHz interference)
- Other Bluetooth devices competing for bandwidth
Move away from potential interference sources and test. If the disconnections stop, you've found the cause.
Fix 8: Check Ear Detection
AirPods use proximity sensors to detect when they're in your ears. If the sensors malfunction (dirty or defective), AirPods think you've removed them and pause/disconnect.
Test: Settings → Bluetooth → [AirPods] → "i" → toggle OFF "Automatic Ear Detection." If disconnections stop, ear detection sensors are the issue. Clean the sensor area (the flat inside surface) thoroughly. If cleaning doesn't help, the sensor may need Apple service.
Fix 9: iOS Update
Check for and install any pending iOS updates. Settings → General → Software Update. Apple frequently patches Bluetooth connectivity issues in iOS updates.
Fix 10: Hardware Issue
If none of the above fixes the problem:
- Single AirPod disconnects: That specific AirPod may have a hardware defect. Apple will replace individual AirPods for $69-89.
- Both AirPods disconnect: The charging case's Bluetooth module may be failing. Case replacement is $79-99.
- Check warranty: If your AirPods are under warranty or AppleCare+, contact Apple Support for free replacement.
The AppleCare+ for AirPods ($29 or $3.49/month) covers accidental damage and hardware defects for 2 years.
Preventive Maintenance
- Clean AirPods and case monthly
- Keep firmware updated
- Charge the case regularly (even when not in daily use)
- Don't store AirPods in extreme temperatures
- Avoid dropping AirPods (impacts can damage internal antenna connections)
