Running with earbuds should be simple: put them in, press play, and forget they exist. But anyone who has dealt with earbuds falling out mid-stride, cutting out from sweat, or dying halfway through a long run knows it is anything but simple. We tested 18 pairs of wireless earbuds across three months of running — from 5K tempo runs to 20-mile long runs in rain, heat, and cold — to find the best options for every type of runner.
What Makes Running Earbuds Different
Not all earbuds are built for exercise. Running earbuds need three things that casual listening earbuds can skip: a secure fit that survives high-impact movement, an IP rating of at least IPX4 for sweat and rain resistance, and enough battery life to outlast your longest run.
Sound quality matters too, but it takes a back seat to fit and durability. The best-sounding earbuds in the world are useless if they fall out at mile three.
Best Overall: Jabra Elite 8 Active
The Jabra Elite 8 Active are the earbuds we reached for most often during testing. They combine military-grade durability (IP68 rating) with a wing-free design that somehow stays locked in during even the most aggressive sprints.
The sound profile is punchy and bass-forward — exactly what you want when you need motivation at mile 18. Active Noise Cancellation works well but the real star is the HearThrough transparency mode, which lets in traffic and ambient noise without making your music sound hollow.
Battery life is eight hours in the buds with an additional 24 from the case. We never once ran out of juice during testing, even on back-to-back run days without charging.
Best Budget: Soundcore Sport X10
If you do not want to spend $200 on running earbuds, the Soundcore Sport X10 deliver about 85 percent of the Jabra experience at a third of the price. The rotating ear hooks lock the buds in place and the IPX7 rating means you can literally rinse them under a faucet after a sweaty run.
Sound quality is surprisingly good for the price. The bass is slightly bloated compared to the Jabra, but the Soundcore app lets you EQ it to your preference. Battery life is eight hours — identical to the Jabra.

Best for Safety: Shokz OpenRun Pro 2
For road runners who need full situational awareness, bone conduction headphones are the answer. The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 sit on your cheekbones rather than in your ears, delivering music through vibration while leaving your ear canals completely open.
The sound is not going to match traditional earbuds — bass is thinner and you lose some detail — but the safety trade-off is worth it. You can hear cars, cyclists, dogs, and other runners clearly. The OpenRun Pro 2 improved bass response significantly over the original, making music genuinely enjoyable rather than merely tolerable.
They are also incredibly comfortable for long runs. At just 29 grams, you forget they are there after the first mile. Battery life is 10 hours and a 5-minute quick charge gives you 1.5 hours.
Best for Audiophiles: Sony WF-1000XM5
If sound quality is your top priority and you run primarily on treadmills or safe trails, the Sony WF-1000XM5 are the best-sounding earbuds you can buy. Period. The soundstage is wide, the detail retrieval is exceptional, and the noise cancellation is class-leading.
The caveat: they are only IPX4 rated (splash-proof but not submersible) and the fit, while comfortable, is not as secure as the Jabra or Soundcore for high-impact activity. We had occasional shifting during fast sprints but never a full dislodge.
Best for Long Runs: Samsung Galaxy Buds FE
For marathon training where battery life and comfort matter more than premium sound, the Samsung Galaxy Buds FE are an underrated gem. They are lightweight at just 5.6 grams per bud, have active noise cancellation, and cost under $60.
Battery life is six hours with ANC on and eight hours with it off — plus an additional 21 hours from the case. For a weekend long run followed by a recovery jog the next day, you only need to charge once.
Tips for Running with Earbuds
Find your ear tip size. Most fit issues come from using the wrong-sized ear tips. Spend five minutes trying all three sizes that come in the box. The right fit should create a gentle seal without pressure.
Use a running-specific EQ. Bass-heavy profiles help maintain rhythm and motivation. Most companion apps (Jabra Sound+, Soundcore, Sony Headphones Connect) have sport-optimized presets.
Enable transparency mode on roads. Even if you prefer ANC on the treadmill, switch to transparency or ambient mode when running near traffic. No playlist is worth a trip to the emergency room.
Clean your earbuds weekly. Sweat contains salt that corrodes contacts and clogs speaker mesh. A quick wipe with a slightly damp cloth after every run extends their lifespan dramatically.

The Verdict
For most runners, the Jabra Elite 8 Active is the answer. They nail every category that matters: fit, durability, sound, and battery life. Budget runners should grab the Soundcore Sport X10, and road runners who prioritize safety should seriously consider the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2.
Whatever you choose, good running earbuds transform the experience. They turn a grueling long run into something you almost look forward to.
