Apple Mac Mini M4 Review: Small Box Big Power

Apple redesigned the Mac Mini for the M4 generation, shrinking it from an already-small square to a 5-inch-square palm-sized box. The M4 chip inside delivers performance that embarrasses Windows desktops twice its size and price. We used the Apple Mac Mini M4 as our primary desktop for six weeks.

Design and Size

The new Mac Mini is shockingly small. At 5 x 5 x 2 inches, it is smaller than many external hard drives. It disappears on a desk, slides into a bookshelf, or mounts behind a monitor with a VESA bracket. The aluminum unibody construction feels premium and doubles as a heat sink.

The front features two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4) and a headphone jack. The back provides three additional Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet (upgradeable to 10GbE), and a power connector. Five Thunderbolt 4 ports total is generous and eliminates the need for most docking stations.

Performance: The M4 Delivers

The base M4 chip with 16GB unified memory handles everyday tasks with zero friction. Safari with 30 tabs, Slack, Spotify, Figma, and a dozen other apps open simultaneously — the Mac Mini never stuttered. Activity Monitor showed memory pressure firmly in the green even under this load.

For creative work, the M4 exports 4K video in Final Cut Pro roughly 2x faster than the M2 Mac Mini and matches the M2 Pro in many benchmarks. Photo editing in Lightroom is instantaneous — slider adjustments, lens corrections, and batch exports happen without the spinning wheel.

For software development, the M4 compiles Swift projects 40% faster than the M2. Docker containers launch quickly, and running multiple development servers simultaneously is effortless.

Gaming on Mac

Casual gaming is surprisingly capable. Apple Arcade games run flawlessly. Resident Evil Village, Baldur's Gate 3, and other titles with native Mac ports run well at medium settings. The game library on macOS remains limited compared to Windows, but it is improving steadily.

For serious gaming, this is not the right machine. Build a PC or buy a console.

Compared to the Competition

At $599 (base M4, 16GB, 256GB SSD), the Mac Mini is the cheapest entry point to Apple Silicon desktop computing. The closest Windows competitor in terms of size and silence is the Intel NUC lineup, which costs similar money for significantly less performance.

The Mac Mini M4 Pro at $1,399 (24GB, 512GB) targets professionals who need the extra GPU cores and RAM bandwidth. For most users, the base M4 is more than sufficient.
